We have loved teaching your students this year! |
May 1, 2017
It is hard to believe how quickly the END of the year is approaching! We have seen a lot of student growth already this school year, but we need your support to give the students the extra push they need in these final weeks and months. Please check your student's agendas and folders for other information regarding upcoming events as well as our monthly newsletter. In Reading, we are preparing for the end of the year testing for TRC. We have been working so hard all year, and it is so important that students know how important it is that they show what they have learned. The first grade goal is Level J, and we also have been encouraging students to remember that all growth is something to be proud of. Students should know where they are and what they need to work on to improve, your assistance would be greatly appreciated! In math we are learning fact families, making 10's, and doubles. Please practice double facts with your scholars at home and complete homework nightly. This year has been so special, and one we will never forget! These final weeks are so essential for students to show what they have learned through this school year. |

Learning Goals2016-2017 school year:Literacy In first grade, students will continue to grow as learners by expanding our knowledge of phonic spelling patterns, sight words and vocabulary. As readers, we will apply a variety of comprehension stratigies to monitor our understanding and begin to read/think beyond the text. We will dive deeply into fiction, nonfiction and poetry. As writers, we will develop personal narratives, opinion piece and nonfiction text with complete sentences, proper grammer and appropriate details. In order to ensure that all students are having their needs met students will work in small groups, independently and one-on-one with the teacher. Students will also be required to complete nightly reading for at least 30 minutes.Math In math, students will be expanding and enforcing strategies for addition and subtraction. They will be developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones. Our scholars will be working on measuring using various objects as units. Additionally, they will be learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes and their attributes.Science As scientists, we will learn to ask questions and record our observations and answers. We will explore topics including the world of plants and animals, the different phases of the moon, how forces affect the motion of an object, and the physical properties of Earth materials that make them useful in different ways.Social StudiesSocial Studies for Elementary School Children: Preparing for the 21st Century
History is a very important aspect in all our lives. The social studies are the study of political, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of societies in the past, present, and future. For elementary school children, as well as for all age groups social studies have several purposes. The social studies equip them with the knowledge and understanding of the past necessary for coping with the present and planning for the future, enable them to understand and participate effectively in their world, and explain their relationship to other people and to social, economic, and political institutions. Social studies can provide students with the skills for productive problem solving and decision making, as well as for assessing issues and making thoughtful value judgments. Above all, the social studies help students to integrate these skills and understandings into a framework for responsible citizen participation, whether in their play group, the school, the community, or the world. http://www.socialstudies.org/positions/elementary It is our goal in First Grade, here at Winterfield Elementary to build enthusiastic and lifelong learners. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact either Ms. Causby or Ms. Daugherty at the school. |
